Care For All in Education: December 2024 Spotlight

Care For All in Education: December 2024 Spotlight

As December approaches and the year wraps up, it can be a time of reflection and renewal. December also brings the holiday season, which can be one of the most joyful times of the year, but it often leaves us feeling exhausted, stressed, financially strapped and emotionally depleted. Additionally, there is the challenge of the colder weather and shorter days which can impact mental health and wellbeing.

Whether struggling with the joys and achievements of the year or navigating this time with difficult family relationships or loss of loss ones. It can be a time to reconnect with friends and family but can bring stress and heightened emotions. December is a poignant reminder of the passing of time. As December transitions to the New Year, think of this time as an opportunity to embrace new beginnings, progress forward with the lessons learned and set intentions for the future. This is the time to nurture the body and the mind and recalibrate.

Whether alone or with family, the end of year can be a time filled with enjoyment, self-care and reflection.

Recommendations for self-care for mental health and to ensure a mentally healthy stress-free December 2024:

  • Connect. Spend time with loved ones, family and friends, in person or virtually.
  • Stay Active and Get Outdoors. Go for a walk, play with others and have fun.
  • Practice Mindfulness. Try meditation, deep breathing or yoga to stay grounded.
  • Read and relax. Create a cozy reading corner and take time to relax.
  • Create New Traditions. Start something new, such as a new hobby or baking a special recipe.
  • Eat Healthy and Sleep. Balance holiday treats with nutritious meals and have regular physical activity. Consistent sleep is important to establish in an active busy time.
  • Volunteer. Giving to others can improve mental health and well-being.

Remember it is okay to have mixed emotions at this time of year. Prioritize what makes you feel good and take care of yourself.

These suggestions are available to you throughout the year, not just during the end of year or holidays. Consider incorporating some of the recommendations in your daily practice and see if any of them help to lighten the load.
